Time to tile
The word trend is used a little over-zealously in the world
of interiors and, in this case, I don’t think it accurately describes how the
tiles featured here have found their way back into the spotlight. The styles
below aren’t strictly new ideas but come bursting full of inspiration from
traditional practices in North Africa or the Middle East, each with a unique
modern twist. ‘Trend’ also doesn’t give these tiles the credit they deserve, they
are timeless designs and should last a lifetime, or at least until the next big
refurb…
Zellige Tiles
We’re kicking off
with one of the most coveted tiles on the market - the zellige tile is made of
natural clay and can be glazed in a variety of vibrant colours. The colour and
finish are responsible for its surge in popularity. And it’s easy to see why -
adding a splash of colour to your kitchen or bathroom using zellige gives the
space exactly the right amount of exotic flair. It’s no wonder luxury retailers
are having entire store fronts covered. These tiles make us think of warmer
climes, so if you need a sunnier outlook on your interiors you’ve found it.
Marble Tiles
They might not be as colourful as zellige, but marble tiles
retain an age-old luxury. Reminiscent of spa days and luxury hotels, they’re
now more affordable than ever - and savvy homeowners have furnished their
bathrooms to dazzling new heights. Interestingly, we’re seeing the replacement
of traditional square cut marble tiles with more experimental shapes. Smaller
bricks laid in herringbone are extremely fashionable; although, the delicacy
and detail of this approach does mean that often less is more – think feature,
rather than entire room. Scalloped edge marble tiles, or mermaid tiling (the social
media term) are everywhere too. Again, using this intricate tiling subtly can
be more effective than overuse. It works particularly well in smaller bathrooms for shower cubicles.
Tile Shapes
Tile cutters were invented for a reason. Square and
rectangle shapes might be familiar for their practicality (less grouting), but
if you’re looking to rework your larger tiles into something more exciting,
don’t be afraid to try a mix-match approach with different sizes. This technique can be
used to make a stunning geometric jigsaw floor pattern, for a more
modern effect – see here.
Another floor pattern that really stands out for its innovative use of
geometric cuts is the image below. The grey slabs with gold interim is a
chic and innovative take on the traditional styles we’ve all become accustomed
to. Mosaic patterns and decadent colours are still a real team favourite.
Whatever your project, don’t be afraid to experiment with tiles.
